A view to inspire

My critique partner and absolute BESTIE, Amber over at The Writing Ant has some amazing pictures on her blog of things that are inspiring her throughout her current WIP.

The photographs are mostly ones she has found online, with a few spur-of-the-moment images thrown in, that reflect something in her writing, or that she can look at from time to time to better picture whats happening at a certain point. I think she says it better than me... I may have to check with her...

Anyway!

I LOVE this idea! Kind of like having your own novel photo album.

We also both have "Soundtracks" for our WIP's. Songs that really express a certain character, moment, scene, feeling, or (fill in the blank). Songs that take you to a place in your heart where creativity is kept and can sometimes be unlocked with these melodies.

Do you have a soundtrack?

I haven't checked out many images online yet, but today I went on a little jaunt down to the Gold Coast (about 30 mins from where I live) to several locations where some of my scenes are set (or places that have inspired settings is more accurate) and took a couple of happy snaps that I hope I will be able to look back on and find inspiration in those dark hours when words evade me.

Also note my WIP is not about beaches or the sun, or a perky fantasy land, but these pics are just to help my muse come out to play. Sometimes. Other times I just think it's nice to look at pretty pictures.

What inspires you?

  1. Mwah!! xx

    I LOVE the second & third shots - fabulous! And the last looks great in b&w!

    I think images and music are very important in the way we shape our novels. Sometimes they're the only thing that can break through a creative drought and make those words flow again.

    Sounds like you had a fun day and you collected some great shots. xx a

  3. I've always had a soundtrack for every story I've written. I had one long playlist, but I actually broke it down to love songs, "strong girl" songs, and lastly, a best of selection that I am planning on sending along to my beta readers.

  4. Love the pics.
    I have a soundtrack for my MS. I also have lists of the songs for each character.
    I listen to the playlist when writing/editing. I find it helps if I get stuck.

  5. it seems music really helps us to get into the right head space, the head of our characters of just of the feeling we need for different scene and moments.
    @ tara- yes The Ant and I swapped playlists recently and its funny when you listen and get a picture in your head that flows with the writing and the song.
    @ lindsay- i like the idea of different songs for individual characters, so far ive only got songs for the MC and for teh 'feel' of scenes. it would be interesting to get songs for some of the other key players and see what 'they' come up with. great idea!
    thanks lindsay and tara, as always for your comments :)

  6. What gorgeous pics! I use a soundtrack too. I have music mostly for my MC and then songs that go along with each chapter. Like Lindsay said, it helps so much when I get stuck.

    Thanks Ali for stopping by my blog and following!

  9. thanks for the comments guys! just a late thought from me on this- i was thinking how much music can play a part in developing our characters to an extent. i mean you try and understand them better and know them more through the music "they" would listen to, they can tell you how they see themselves. now am i talking crazy???

    @renae- same to you! :)

    @clara- i love that!

    @mohamed- thanks for stopping by and commenting! i think how i feel about something will always play some role in getting me started on an idea.

  11. Yes, I have soundtracks to my manuscripts as well. My current sci-fi WIP is backed by lots of experimental, dark recordings to get me in the mood to write dystopian fiction

  12. Sometimes I hear a song that just sounds like it reflects the feeling of one of my characters. I'm strange enough that I've been known to play it over and over and over while brainstorming my WIP.

  13. @l'aussie- thank-you for thinking of me! i will fins someone very suitable to pass onto as i received this last week, but its a pleasure to be thought of again! :)

    @chris- yes the music def has to take you to the right place. what you describe sounds like it would be interesting paored with a dystopian theme

    @lisa- not strange at all! at least i hope not because i do that too! like it keeps the flow or something.

    thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting!

  14. This is a great idea, I am so going to make a photo album and playlist for my novel! I know just the song for my characters first kiss scene!
    I also use pictures of celebrities that resemble the kind of look I want my characters to have.
    I think doing these things helps to link our right and left sides of our brain to create richer more meaningful characters and stories.

  15. @chicklitauthor- i like that idea of getting the kind of style your MC's would have! Yes it is a great way to connect more with the story and characters. i think the more believable they are to you, the more believable they will be to everyone else :)
